No two days are the same for a Fort Worth Police Department (FWPD) officer.
However, when duty calls, you must be physically and mentally ready to answer it. That’s why our recruitment process includes core requirements that you must meet, including the Physical Resiliency Assessment (PRA).
The PRA is a rigorous test that ensures recruits meet the job’s demands from day one.
Whether you’re actively training or just starting to explore the process, understanding the PRA can help you prepare mentally and physically. Let’s take a closer look at FWPD’s physical fitness requirements.
What Is the Physical Resiliency Assessment?
The Physical Resiliency Assessment is not your average fitness test. It’s designed to simulate real-world situations you may face while on duty. The test evaluates your strength, agility, cardiovascular endurance, and ability to perform under stress. Every component reflects movements or situations during patrol work, arrests, or emergency response. The PRA includes:
- Push Ups
- Sit Ups
- Row Machine Test
- Timed 1.5 Mile Run
Male and Female Fitness Standards
Training Tips for Success
We encourage recruits to start preparing well in advance of their test date. Here are a few strategies to help you train smart:
- Simulate the test format: Practice moving from one high-intensity task to another without rest. This will build endurance and simulate the full-body exhaustion felt during the PRA.
- Prioritize functional strength: Exercises like sled pushes, farmer's carries, pull-ups, and stair climbs will better prepare you than traditional weightlifting alone.
- Train your grip and shoulders: The dummy drag and trigger pull simulation requires significant upper body and grip strength.
- Work on your cardio: Interval training, sprint drills, and endurance runs will improve your time and help control your breathing between tasks.
- Stretch and recover: Flexibility and recovery are just as important as strength. Daily stretching can prevent injuries and improve performance.
How the FWPD Helps You Meet Your Physical Fitness Requirements
The Fort Worth Police Department doesn’t leave you alone to figure it out. You can review the official PRA video and breakdown on the City of Fort Worth recruitment site. We also encourage open communication with recruiters who can answer questions and share preparation tips.
Once accepted into the academy, you’ll receive physical training and support to improve your fitness level. The academy includes structured physical training sessions that help officers build strength, endurance, and agility under the guidance of experienced instructors.
