Entry-Level Applicants: What to Expect

Let’s explore what to expect when you apply as an entry-level officer. Are you ready to make a difference in your community? As an entry-level police officer, you’ll gain the training, support, and experience necessary to build a long-lasting career in law enforcement while making an immediate impact on one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas.

Step 1: Submit Your Application

Everything begins with your online application. You’ll apply through the City of Fort Worth’s job board. Make sure your application is complete and accurate, and that you meet the minimum qualifications, such as being at least 20 years old by the time they take the Civil Service test (and not older than 50), having a high school diploma or GED, and being a U.S. citizen with a valid driver’s license. If you have a GED, you need 12 hours of college credit as well. High school graduates do not need college credit. 

Step 2: Take the Civil Service Exam

After your application is accepted, you’ll be scheduled for the Civil Service exam, which assesses basic areas, such as:
  • Reading comprehension
  • Basic math
  • Situational reasoning
  • And more
While law enforcement experience is valuable, strong critical thinking is second to none.

Step 3: Complete the Personal History Statement

Next, you’ll submit a detailed personal history booklet covering your education, employment, legal history, military service, and personal references. Make sure to be thorough and honest. This document helps background investigators understand your life experience and assess your qualifications.

Step 4: Pass the Physical Resiliency Assessment

The Physical Resiliency Assessment (PRA) is FWPD’s fitness test. It simulates real-world police duties through a timed obstacle course. Within a 3-minute time limit, you’ll run, drag a dummy, scale a fence, carry weights, and more. This test requires preparation but is achievable with consistent training and focus.

Step 5: Complete a Polygraph and Interview

After passing the PRA, you’ll move forward to a polygraph exam, which helps verify the details from your personal history statement. You’ll also complete an oral board interview with FWPD staff. This is your opportunity to explain your interest in law enforcement and show your professionalism and communication skills.

Step 6: Undergo Background, Medical, and Psychological Evaluations

A complete background investigation follows. Investigators will check your criminal, credit, employment, and education history. You’ll also complete a medical examination and psychological assessment to ensure you’re physically and mentally fit for duty.

Step 7: Receive Your Academy Acceptance

If you pass each stage, you’ll receive an offer to join the Fort Worth Police Academy. Congratulations! Now, your formal training will begin. From classroom instruction and field tactics to physical conditioning and ethics, the academy prepares you for life as an officer.
