The Role of Situational Awareness Training in Police Academy

Hands-On Training

  • Transition from a kneeling position to sprinting and then scale a fence
  • Run in a zigzag pattern as if in a pursuit run, then climb the equivalent of four staircases
  • Restrain an individual weighing 180 pounds by using a Power Training Machine (PTM)
  • Fire a weapon with the dominant hand 18 times and switch to the non-dominant hand, firing 17 times
  • Simulate a victim rescue by carrying an 88-pound bag a required distance without dropping it

The PRA tests emulate real-life situations that recruits may face. Using their situational awareness skills enables them to assess their surroundings and respond appropriately, given their physical endurance. Recruits may be trained in other physical exercises to determine their ability to handle many hours on the job and diverse situations; these tests often include sit-ups, push-ups, and timed runs. 

Classroom Instruction

A core part of a police academy program is classroom instruction; recruits learn about criminal procedures and Texas Law. Applying this knowledge to their police work creates a foundation for situational awareness within legal bounds. This means that recruits can better understand legal thresholds in a given situation and recognize when activity is criminal. Classroom instruction enables recruits to turn awareness into organized and lawful action. Recruits demonstrate what they have learned through written assessments, which test their situational judgement before they apply it in the field.

Recruits also learn about cultural awareness to help them evaluate diverse situations. This training may prepare them to read visual and social cues, so they can communicate effectively with Texas’s multicultural population. They should be aware of the environment and anticipate people’s behaviors to determine an appropriate course of action.
